Comparatively dates about the Lubana lake` s bird fauna are greatly poor. The lake itself as a duck nesting ground never has been significant with notable fluctuations of the water level and shortage of proper biotopes. The island, middle shoal and other similar coastal districts remain covered with water. There are no dry places, such needed for the duck nesting. Any nesting conditions are only for the species which make floating nests or whose nests are fitted to fluctuations of the water level (coot, grebe). During summer months in the lake feeds not nested or lay lost water birds. During the duck hunting` s opening (usually in the middle of August) the cluches of the ducks grew much more due to unceasing influx from larger lake` s high water scene of action. During this period a remarkable duck concentration could be seen in the shallow, overgrown territories of the lake. This territory lost its previous meaning as a concentration place of water birds during summer end after the lake` s diking in and keeping up the high water level. In present conditions the lake more or less is suitable only as settling ground for pochards (European pochard, diver, goosander) which travel through in spring and autumn. Lately in the lake nests mostly only coot, great crested grebe and mute swan. Since 1989 the cormorant started to nest in the lake. The best time for the migrating birds` observation is April – May.
Beliefs. If the southern tip of the Lubana lake rustles then a rainy weather is expected. /A. Krone, Meirani/ At sinful places have the lakes fallen down and drowned the unrighteous. /G. Pols, Baldone/ If the Lubana lake` s tip which is located to the side of Varaklani is rumbling then it will rain soon. /A. Aizsils, Lubana/
Legends. (Lubans, 3. Strautmalietis in Lubana. „Balss“ in 1888 nr. 39. LP, VII, I, 1288, 4.) In the times when lakes had a habit to move from one place to another in the place where is Lubana lake now was a big and beautiful town. Its sinfully living people had annoyed the God and then He decided to wipe out the town from the earth with all inhabitants. In one nice summer day two old ladies were drowsing by a river` s edge outside the town and saw a big dark cloud flying up. Soon the cloud reached the town and started to make such a noise as if somebody were ripping shingles. When they heard that noise one of them exclaimed: “Honestly sister the Lubans himself have come!” In that moment with a big noise the cloud fell down digging in his waves the town with its inhabitants. Only the two ladies survived because they gave the name of the lake. The comer lake previously was located where now Riga is. Every year one messenger from Lubana lake goes to Riga to ask whether the Riga once will be completely built because when the building will be done then the Lubana lake will go back to his former place.
Another legend written by R.Blaus in Ergli. Brivzemniek` s “Sbornik”. LP, VII, I, 1304, 16. One giant filled up the oldest Kangari lake. The lake flamed with anger about such giant` s work and three days three nights he roistered. He wanted to destroy the Kangari hills. When it did not work out, he decided to look for another place and went up. He soared and went, went straight towards Aiviekste river where now Lubana lake is. This place was extremely nice, with houses like a small town. One day girls, drowsing by the river, in the air saw a big cloud, they heard big noises in the cloud. Others said: “It rips so as if ripping shingles!”, but one said: “That cloud is nothing else but a big lake!” Just after saying that the cloud, the Kangari lake, fell down, totally drowning the nice valley of the river. But girls – because they had guessed the lake` s name – were cast ashore and survived. But the lake was named Lubans.
In the place of Lubana lake previously was a castle where a rough master governed. He married witch` s daughter. The master constantly fought with other masters but when they were preparing for the attack, the old witch as usual with neighing announced about that to her daughter` s husband. The giant Lubans could not bear that and asked the Thunderer (probably the God) to punish the rogue. And then it started to rain water from the air which drowned the evil master` s castle with the locality. The witch` s daughter wanted to escape rolling with her a butt with gold. But then the thunder clapped and the witch` s daughter with her butt disappeared in the ground. The new lake was called Lubans. The other lake which appeared in the place of witch` s house was called Zviedzezers. The place where sank the witch` s daughter with the butt of gold is called Naudas lake (The Money` s lake).
