Bolēnu Acu avots (Bolēni eyes’ spring)

Bolēnu Acu avots (Bolēni eyes’ spring) as an ancient place of cult is an archaeological monument. The water temperature in this spring remains at +7 degrees by Celsius throughout the year. The health spring seems as if boiling, and does not freeze during winter, since it maintains its stable temperature all year long. This health spring is approximately one-and-a-half square meters large, and 20 – 30 cm deep. A groove for taking water has been set up down the fall and nearby there is a notice sign, informing that this spring is special. It is believed that the water from this spring has healing properties and many legends are winded around its provenance.

Two points of 16 Strūve geodetic arc, included in UNESCO World Culture and Heritage List, are located in Latvia – Jēkabpils and Sestukalns.

Strūve geodetic arc is the first precise measurement, performed in order to attain precise form and proportions of the Planet according to Newton’s theory that the planet is not in shape of a regular sphere. This measurement was performed in the second half of 19^th century. Geodetic arc is a chain consisting of 258 triangles and 265 geodetic points. These points are located in ten North-European and East-European, as well as Asian countries. The chain of meridian arc is 2800 kilometres long. 16 points of this chain are located in Latvia.

Description: The park is established in an area of around 2 ha and one of the biggest stone collections in Latvia can be seen there (~3,000 stones).  Tourists are also offered to see a collection of ancient household objects and tools and the bravest can visit the ”Spoku namins” (Ghost room) where various nature formations can be found. The trail is to be taken together with a guide.

Address: Prauliena parish, Madona region

Description: The largest stone in Vidzeme, 20m of perimeter.

The stone was fully uncovered only in 1982 during the regulation works of Kuja River.  Nowadays it is used as a pillar for a foot-bridge over the river.
