The main functions of the Probation Office:

• To give an assessment report about the probation client;
• To ensure the development of probation programmes and the implementation of licensed programmes;
• To organize accomplishment of the criminal sentence – the forced labour;
• To organize implementation of the forced mean – the social work;
• To control the persons during the probation against whom the criminal process is terminated, and who has been conditionally released from criminal liability;
• To organize and supervise the reconciliation in the criminal process;
• To control the persons during the probation that are conditionally sentenced or conditionally released prior to the expiry of the sentence from the imprisonment institutions;
• To provide the post-penitentiar help for persons that are being prepared to discharge or are already released from the imprisonment institutions.

According to rules Nr 402, June 19 2007 under the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia “Kārtība, kādā sasauc Valsts probācijas dienesta konsultatīvo padomju sēdes un organizē padomju darbu, kā arī pieaicina citu institūciju pārstāvjus” („Order  in which is the State Probation Serviceconsultive council meetings convoced and organize the work of councils as well as co-opt members of other institutions”) July 13 2007 was the Madona territorial consultive council of structural unit in a following composition established:

Chairman of the council:

Valda Buiķe – chairwoman of the State Probation Service Madona territorial structural unit;

Councillors:

Aldis Ļeļevs – attorney of Madona district prosecutor’s office;

Dzintra Apine – Vidzeme Regional Court’s judge in Madona permanent session;

Kornēlija Poča – judge of the Madona district court;

Vladimirs Leokaitis – deputy head of the Madona district police office, chief of Public order police office;

Valdis Gotlaufs – deputy of Madona district council, chairman of Madona district Prauliena parish council;

Gundars Riekstiņš - deputy of Madona district council, head of Madona town Social service.

The main tasks of the Consultive council:

• In collaboration with the government institutions, local authorities and nongovernmental organizations to evaluate the situation in the probation fields and to agree on unified approach in problem solving;
• To give opinion to State Probation Service about the ready legislations projects that concern the cooperation of institutions at a united policy realization in the probation field;
• To review and hand in at the service proposals of national and municipal institutions and also the nongovernmental organizations that affects the probation field;
• To provide the informative intermedium between governmental institutions, local authorities and nongovernmental organizations and the Service.
