Between Teici bog in the west and Malta river in the east, 13 km south of Lubana lake there lies a small town of Varaklani having rich historical heritage.
Varaklani is located near Rezekne Jekabpils motorway 200 km from Riga. (Jēkabpils 55 km; Rēzekne 46 km; Madona 55 km; Daugavpils 100 km).
For the first time Varaklani was mentioned in historical sources in 1483 as a land owned by Livonia order master Bernta fon der Borh family. Count Michael Borhs in 1789 built a stone palace according to the Project designed by the Italian architect Vincenco Macotti and set up a beautiful park with alleys of lime- trees , artifically made islands and ponds. In the palace park on the banks of the river Kazavas lies a huge stone which is called Stone of Love. A lot of tales are associated with Borh family and this stone.
Now the palace houses the Varaklani museum of local history .
In 1814 M.Borhs widow Eleanore built a chapel in Varaklani and saint Victors ashes were brought there from Italy.
Under the vaults of the chapel cellar the Borh family rest in peace.
In 1854 count Carols Borhs built also a catholic church.
At the end of the 19th century a lutheran and orthodox churches were built, the latter burnt down in 1944.
The town status to Varaklani was given in 1928. During the world war II Varaklani was badly destroyed that is the reason for one- storeyed buildings which were made of wood after the war.
Within the period of 1950 1956 Varaklani was a district center. Thanks to that a secondary school building , hospital and culture house were built there.
In the sixties of the 20 th century the largest enterprises in Varaklani were PMK and flax factory. During that time new bloks of flats were built in Varaklani forming a new town area close to the school.
