DESCRIPTION OF ERGLI PARISH

HISTORICAL OUTLOOK

            As a settlement Ergli was first mentioned in historical sources in 1374.

Through centuries Ergli people have experienced a number of rules- German, Polish, Swedish and Russian. The twenties of the 20 th century are considered as the beginning of the modern Ergli parish.  During the World War II Ergli was severely destroyed and was almost built anew after the war.

From 1950 to 1959 Ergli was the center of the district, later a town-village in Madona district and since 1992 it a town with the  country area which form the present Ergli parish.

TERRITORY OF ERGLI PARISH

13138,5 ha ( 50,9% covered by forests).

The lakes located in the parish : Pulgoznis ( Āķēnu), Ivestes ( Vecmuižas), Laišķēnu, Ilzenes .

The parish is crossed by the rivers: Ogre, Valuola, Meltne, Narūža, Piparupīte

Total length of the parish roads: 147,5 km, out of which 70,3 % are local roads , 29,7% state roads . The length of asphalted roads in the parish  3,6 km .

Ērgļi is the final destination of a 97 km long railway connection Rīga – Ērgļi.

POPULATION as of  1 January  2004- 2830.

82% of the total population lives in the parish center Ergli.
