Madona district is located in the north-east of Latvia between the regions of Vidzeme and Latgale.
It is divided into 20 local administrative entities and 4 towns. Madona is centrally located in the district 165 km from the capital city Riga.
The neighbouring districts are Cesu, Ogre, Aizkraukle, Preili, Rezekne, Balvi and Gulbene. The farmland constitutes 1249,7 square kilometers or 37,3% of the total territory and the forest- covered area is 1529, 8 square kilometers or 45,7 % . Madona district has a population of 45 648 .
The highest point in Latvia is Gaizinkalns (elevation 311,6 meters above the sea level) and other hills in the territory of Madona district are: Nesaules kalns (284 m), Bakuzu kalns (267 m), Glemzu kalns (260 m), Spiru kalns (260 m) and numerous hillocks with nearby lakes - Kakisa (Viesura), Kala, Lideres, Talejas, Liezeres, Pulgosnis .
