Madona District is situated in the southeast of Vidzeme. It consists of two geographicaly different territories: Vidzeme Central Highlands with the highest point of Latvia Gaizins ( 311.6 m a.s.l.) and Lubana Lowlands where a part of the largest lake
of the country Lake Lubans borders on our district.
With its territory of 3349.3 sq. km is Madona District the second largest district in Latvia. It borders on Cesis, Aizkraukle, Preili, Rezekne, Balvi and Gulbene Districts.
Twenty protected nature territories cover 16 % of the total area. The largest and most important ones are Nature Reserves Teici and Krustkalni and Vestiena Local Landscape Park.
By the end of 2003 there were 20 rural communities: Arona, Barkava, Dzelzava, Ērgļi, Indrāni, Jumurda, Kalsnava, Lazdona, Liezere, Ļaudona, Mārciena, Mētriena, Ošupe, Prauliena, Sarkaņi, Sausnēja, Varakļāni, Vestiena and 4 towns: Madona, Cesvaina with the rural territory, Lubāna and Varakļāni. The total number of inhabitants was 45 388 on 31. 07. 2003.
